Part of Dr. Nermin Majid’s speech, at a seminar for a book publishing seminar: Women above Ashes, by Yemeni writer and activist: Nabila Said:

“War was not a need to create a challenge for women in Yemen, war was fate or foolishness. When people of Yemen were attached to unity, the separation did not come, but the civil war in the conflict of wills and militias. In this bleak atmosphere, a Yemeni generation who does not know the culture of peace and security, but rather the roar of bullets and the sound of guns, was born.
War does not differentiate between a woman and a child, nor between youth and old age. War is a reaper of souls! Yet, women are, by nature, the protector of the family and the one who unites the family, and even though she was oppressed, she persevered and created a new life out of nowhere. War challenged women to search for a window of light in the midst of darkness, and to create hope for tomorrow despite the lack of hope in the present. Yemeni women recorded achievements in the fields of education, public service, culture and politics.
Women above Ashes came today to celebrate the achievements of the Yemeni woman who refused to be soft and wait for the moment, but rather sought to create the moment and build on it.”
